Enjoy an engaging summer story, interactive activity, and short nature walk with Seasonal Education and Communication Specialist Emma. This event is geared toward children aged 3-6, but all ages are welcome.
Sponsored by Hearty Roots, this event invites you to connect, create, and imagine a future where all youth can thrive. Join us for a day of hands-on experiences, performances, and conversations as we share insights, spotlight youth-focused programs working in Midcoast Maine and beyond, and highlight youth voice through art, music, and more.
Learn basic skills in wood carving and woodburning in this two-hour class. Create a small piece of avian art you can finish during the workshop and take home with you! Class sizes are limited, and participants must be at least 12 years old. Pre-registration is required.
Spend an hour at Old York, hearing a story highlighting New England
history and culture. Afterwards enjoy a related activity or take a peek inside
the historic one-room York Corner Schoolhouse.
Recommended for children ages 4 to 10. All children must be accompanied
by an adult. Admission is FREE!
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in a lighthouse, surrounded by water? In this story, see how the daily life of a lighthouse keeper and his family unfolds. Days and seasons pass, and the keeper writes every detail in his logbook. Afterwards, visit the museum gallery and learn about a real family of lighthouse
keepers who tended the Boone Island Light in York. We will also have a visit from the current day keeper of Nubble Light.
Explore nature journaling in this workshop on Wednesday, July 9, from 10:30am to 12:30pm. Scientists, artists, and outdoor enthusiasts all utilize nature journaling, a skill that is accessible to anyone. Under the guidance of Maine Master Naturalist Karen Zimmermann, and using observation artistic abandon, participants will walk away with a small nature journal of their own. All materials will be provided. Cost is $21 for Museum members and $29 for non-members. Registration required.
Do you row your boat? Sail it? Does it have a motor? Young visitors will enjoy learning about boat basics with their families during this Jr. Adventurers program, including making a paper boat and floating in it in our washtub.
Get a little more out of your visit to Penobscot Marine Museum when you stop by during Jr. Adventurers! These weekly drop-in programs are designed for children and their families to have fun at the museum. Each will explore a different topic that relates to our exhibits. Families can read together, do a craft, play a game, and go on a scavenger hunt. Plus, visit with Mr. Ropes, PMM’s cat puppet ambassador at 11am and 1:45pm.

Stop in Richard Boyd Art Gallery in July and relax while viewing a presentation of beautifully detailed paintings that made me pause to take in their beauty, intricate details or contemplate the underlying meaning they convey. Immerse yourself in a world of textures, colors, and details as you explore a range of contrasting styles from impressionism to realism, featuring a magnificent selection of original visual art created by artists from diverse backgrounds. The artists’ individual styles, choice of mediums and color palettes give them distinction in the visual arts community.
The exhibit is comprised of a stunning selection of paintings, each created with heartfelt emotions from the soul of the artist drawing viewers into a moment in time when an event, scene, or color inspired them to create. Whatever the inspiration, these paintings will remain relevant through the years.
The exhibit showcases works by highly regarded, award-winning artists among them Jane Herbert a distinguished fine and commercial artist known for her calming, beautifully detailed acrylic paintings; Deena S. Ball a nationally renowned art educator and instructor known for her use of watercolor on unconventional surfaces; Patricia Chandler a distinguished fine and commercial artist, art instructor, illustrator, and retired art educator well known for her knowledge and ability to create original art across all genres; Carrin Culotta recognized for her traditional style plein air and in studio oil paintings; Tim Eaton a nationally recognized commercial and fine artist known for his landscape paintings; and HM Saffer II an internationally renowned, award-winning performing and visual artist famed for his magnificently layered pointillist style landscape paintings.

Most people know that museums collect objects, put on exhibits and present programs, but just how do the staff go about doing those things? Saco Museum will feature some of its oldest collections dating from the late19th century, as well as recent acquisitions, to illustrate how the secrets are unveiled. Staff will be available most weekdays to answer questions. Exhibit hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, noon to 4 p.m.; Thursday, 4-8 p.m. (free admission); Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Starts Wednesday, July 9th (Wednesday afternoons from 1:30PM-4:30PM for six weeks.)
During this class you will learn the basics of hand building with clay or advance your skills. You will create both functional and sculptural forms. We will explore pinch pots, slab built and coil pots, as well as other techniques. Students will work at their own level with the guidance of the instructor. This will be a fun, creative, and exciting class.
Non-members: $250 for 6 weeks. Members: $200.
Fee does not include materials. Clay and glaze can be purchased from Portland Pottery.
About the instructor: Barry Harrison attended Arizona State University where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Ceramics.
