Foraging wild mushrooms for food and medicine is a great past time but carries the risk of becoming sick from eating the wrong mushrooms or preparing them improperly. New England is seeing an increase in poisoning cases as a result of the significant increase in novices seeking and eating mushrooms without being fully aware of the risk.
This talk will review the common poisonous mushrooms sometimes confused with edibles as well as the range of toxins in New England mushrooms. Guidelines for foragers will be presented; the goal is ensuring safety while eating wonderful wild mushrooms.
Greg Marley is a wild mushroom expert teaching foraging skills across New England. He has consulted with Poison Centers across New England for more than 2 decades as an identification and content expert.

Aug 20 Wednesday
Wednesday, August 20th from 10AM-5PM. Part of the Plein Air Art Festival (Visit https://artascope.org/artascope-plein-air-art-festival for the full festival schedule).
Learn how to utilize color harmonies to create mood in your plein air paintings with artist Catherine Bickford.
Mystery is one of the most important aspects of any painting and color is often the easiest way to create it. Color can translate your areas of interest to the viewer directly. It is common to make the mistake of painting right over the best color compositions in an effort to "finish" the painting. In this class we will slow down, stay loose, and use color with intention and to create dramatic results.
Color mixing is an enjoyable process and a skill that requires practice. In this class we will learn how to use six basic colors (Cadmium Red, Quinacidrone Magenta, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadmium Yellow Light, Phthalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue and Titanium White) to create almost any color.
The focus will be on learning complementary and harmonious color schemes. Mystery is the most important aspect of any painting and color is often the easiest waya to create it. Color can translate your areas of interest to the viewer directly and we often paint right over the best color compositions. In this class we will slow down and use color with more intention and to more dramatic result.
Please bring your materials, as well as your easel set up for painting outside. If you do not have the materials shown under the description at our Eventbrite URL for this workshop, just bring what you have. If you prefer to work with oil, that is fine, too. I personally work with an acrylic ground and oil on top.
Meet at Artascope Studios in Yarmouth at 9:45AM
There will be a lunch break from 1pm-2pm. You can bring your own lunch or check out one of the local restaurants in Yarmouth.
Workshop fee: $149.
Join Friends of Merrymeeting Bay (FOMB) for a special tour of well-known Six River Farm in Bowdoinham at 4:30 on August 20th. The tour, running about an hour will be followed by FOMB’s Annual Meeting and potluck supper.
Located along the shores of Merrymeeting Bay, Six River Farm grows about 22 acres of mixed organic vegetables on approximately 40 acres that owners Nate Drummond and Gabrielle Gosselin own and or manage. The farm operates in Kennebec alluvial soils on both sides of the Abbagadasset River and besides restaurant sales, brings a wide range of organic vegetables to area farmers markets, with the addition of organic berries, cut flowers and organic seedlings in season. At the farmers markets and their farm stand on Centers Point Road, they only sell what they grow and everything from the farm is certified organic by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardiners Association (MOFGA).
For years, FOMB held their annual meeting in January combined with a potluck supper and a presentation as part of their Winter Speaker Series. Then the pandemic hit and the group switched their winter programs to a Zoom format with annual Board elections via mail-in ballots. The Zoom-based speaker series continues to work well allowing participation of FOMB members and others from anywhere in the world and so the group decided has switched their annual meeting/potluck to outside in the summer.
Pre-registration is appreciated for this event but not required. The public is welcome to the farm tour, brief annual meeting and potluck supper, all to be held at 513 Browns Pt. Rd. in Bowdoinham. Pre-register with Ed Friedman at 666-3372.
The FOMB Summer Outside! Series is the warm weather counterpart to FOMB’s popular Winter Speaker Series. Events are usually free and are open to the public. Pre-registration is required unless otherwise noted. FOMB’s next outing will be the always popular Bird Walk with Will Broussard on August 24th from 7:00-9:00 am in Dresden The Bay is home to a wide variety of habitats and birds and is designated a Globally Important Bird Area by the American Bird Conservancy. Pre-register with Ed Friedman at 666-3372.
The full Summer Outside! Series is on the web at: www.friendsofmerrymeetingbay.org
