Attorneys Say Mother Deserves Retrial In Death Of 10-Year-Old Marissa Kennedy

Attorneys for Sharon Kennedy will argue before Maine’s Supreme Judicial Court next week that she deserves a retrial in the abuse death of her 10-year-old daughter, Marissa Kennedy.

The mother was sentenced to 48 years in prison last February. But attorney Chris MacLean says his client was abused by her former husband, Julio Carrillo, who was also sentenced in the girl’s death.

“Sharon was a victim of torture and domestic violence in all forms, and that was crystal clear throughout the trial that we had,” he says.

MacLean says during Sharon Kennedy’s trial, the judge did not instruct the jury about duress, which he argues would have led to a “not guilty” verdict. During sentencing, Waldo County Judge Robert Murray said that the mother was an active participant in the crime.
