AUGUSTA, Maine - The Maine State archives is celebrating its 50th anniversary today. Of course, Maine has been preserving some records since its founding in 1820. But State Archivist David Cheever says the early efforts were - well, you decide.
Cheever says some records preserve details of an otherwise forgotten history. In the early days after statehood, Cheever says the Legislature helped, poor, elderly Revolutionary War veterans after Massachusetts reneged on a promise of land.
Irwin Gratz talks with State archivist David Cheever. There will be ceremonies at the State House later today to mark the 50th anniversary of the Maine State Archives.
