Philosophy: It's Not Just About Abstract Concepts

PORTLAND, Maine - What role do the humanities play in our lives? It's the subject of the current Maine Policy Review, published by the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center at the University of Maine. MPBN Morning Edition host Irwin Gratz is embarking on a series of interviews on the topic. In this post, he talks with Kirsten Jacobson, an associate professor of philosophy at the University of Maine. Jacobson wrote about a program called "Philosophy Across the Ages," which has undergraduate students hold seminars with students at Orono High School or members of the Dirigo Pines Retirement Community. Jacobson says philosophy is less abstract than we believe - it is integral, for instance, to what we think about the recent police shootings of blacks.

Tune in to Maine Calling Aug. 13, when our guest will be Bro Adams, former president of Colby College and now chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
