Maine Group Honors Lawyer Who Argued for Same-Sex Marriage

PORTLAND, Maine - A Portland lawyer who successfully argued for same-sex marriage before the U.S. Supreme Court this year has been honored in Maine.

The Maine Trial Lawyers Association recognized Mary Bonauto with its 2015 Legends Award Wednesday at its annual dinner in Portland.

Bonauto won the nation's first case regarding same-sex marriage, which made it legal in Massachusetts.

She says her achievement "belongs to people all across the nation and the state.''

Bonauto is the civil rights project coordinator for the Boston-based Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders. She has worked at GLAD since 1990 where she has been involved in every major state and federal legal battle over same-sex marriage.
