UMaine Names Endowed Position in Honor of Author Stephen King

ORONO, Maine - An endowed professorship in literature is being established at the University of Maine honoring alumnus and best-selling author Stephen King.

The Stephen E. King Chair in Literature is made possible through a $1 million gift from the Harold Alfond Foundation.  UMaine President Susan Hunter says the position will be a permanent one in the school's English Department.  Hunter says it's the department's first endowed chair.

"This is someone who'll be a faculty member who will teach, who will work with, inspire and engage students, who will work with the graduate students," she says. "We offer the master's degree in our English Department.  So this will be a member of our academic community."

Hunter says a search to fill the position is expected to begin this fall.
