Man Charged in Killing was Freed From Jail 3 Weeks Earlier

PORTLAND, Maine - A 25-year-old man accused of killing a Maine woman in Florida and having sex with her corpse had been released from jail three weeks before the slaying.

The Portland Press Herald reports that Timothy Johnson had been out of jail for 23 days when authorities say he killed 52-year-old Judith Therianos. He was free because prosecutors failed to file charges within 30 days of his arrest in an alleged assault.

Pasco County Assistant State Attorney Chris LaBruzzo says they can't hold people indefinitely.

Authorities say Johnson told other inmates he killed Therianos while they had intercourse March 13, stole the Alfred woman's debit card to buy beer and a meal and then continued having sex with her corpse.

Therianos' remains were found last month in New Port Richey.
