Apple VP Gives $10 Million To Bowdoin To Expand Coastal Studies Center

Bowdoin College has received a $10 million gift from Apple Vice President Phil Schiller and his wife Kim Gassett-Schiller to expand its Coastal Studies Center on Harpswell Sound.

The Schillers, whose son graduated this year, say they have a deep interest in science and finding answers to questions.

“Most of all because now, there’s so much happening with respect to climate change, and it’s a great need for more research, more awareness, more studying the effects and looking for opportunities to do something to try to help the situation in a way that we all do our part,” Phil Schiller says.

The gift will allow Bowdoin to construct a state-of-the-art dry laboratory connected to the center’s existing marine lab, as well as a conference center with modernized classrooms, housing and dining facilities.

The school’s Roux Center for the Environment, made possible by a similar-size gift from Bowdoin parents David and Barbara Roux, is now under construction on the Brunswick campus.
