Water Utility Faces Fine For Sewage Spill In Portland

PORTLAND, Maine - Maine environmental officials say a July sewage spill in Portland violated state law and carries a fine. The Bangor Daily News reports the state Department of Environmental Protection notified the Portland Water District last month. According to the utility, about a million gallons of partially treated sewage poured into Casco Bay after an employee failed to open a release valve. A popular trail was damaged and the city was forced to close a beach.

Portland Water District Director of Wastewater Services Scott Firmin says the utility agrees with the department's conclusion and will pay a penalty.

The utility has been cited for nearly 90 violations since 2013. Firmin says violations have dropped in recent years.

Department spokesman David Madore says the fine amount hasn't been determined yet.
