GUILFORD, Maine - Mayo Regional Hospital has announced it will close its primary care office in a small central Maine town.Hospital officials say Guilford Medical Associates in Guilford will close April 5.
Officials say the practice's closure follows "significant provider turnover'' in past months at the clinic, located 44 miles northwest of Bangor.
Mayo Regional Hospital President and CEO Marie Vienneau called it a "difficult decision'' but pointed to the challenges facing small, rural hospitals as regional and national demand for physicians increases. She said it's proved "impossible'' to recruit a long-term replacement provider.
A temporary provider will see Guilford Medical Associates patients until April, and officials will reassign clinic staff to other Mayo practices.
Mayo says it has openings in its clinics in Milo, Dexter, Corinth and Dover-Foxcroft.
