AUGUSTA, Maine - Operators of some Maine summer camps say a proposal by Gov. Paul LePage to tax nonprofits could cause some to close.
The Republican governor's two-year budget proposal includes a recommendation that the state change a law to allow cities and towns to charge a 50 percent property tax on some nonprofit organizations. Many of Maine's summer camps are on properties that were purchased or donated long ago and their values have increased over the years.
The Sun Journal reports Maine Summer Camps Executive Director Ron Hall says some camps wouldn't be able to afford to pay. Hall says some would likely close and others would reduce programs and scholarships.
About half of the approximately 200 summer camps in Maine are nonprofits.
