WASHINGTON - Maine 2nd District Rep. Bruce Poliquin, who serves on the House Financial Services Committee, is proposing to strengthen pending legislation to reform the Export-Import Bank.
Poliquin, a Republican, says while the proposals now before Congress are a start, they don't go far enough.
"I've requested that additional reforms be included in his legislation including replacing senior management at the bank," he said.
In addition, Poliquin wants a majority of the bank's directors to be non-partisan business professionals, and is seeking to require the bank to reveal the true cost of operations to taxpayers. He also wants a
provision that would reduce taxpayer risk by requiring an increase in bank reserves.
Back in July, Poliquin said he was opposed to re-authorizing the bank, citing corruption. There have been no House votes on the issue. Poliquin says he is leaning towards supporting re-authorization of the bank, but he wants to see what reforms are included in any reform legislation.
The bank's authority to make new loans ran out last June.
