Dunlap Endorses Panel's Pot Recommendation

AUGUSTA, Maine - Maine Secretary of State Matt Dunlap is endorsing the majority recommendation of a working group set up by the Legislature to determine when a person is driving while impaired from the use of marijuana.

The recommendation would set a threshold of 5 nanograms of tetrahydrocannabinol , or THC, per milliliter of blood for a criminal charge of impaired driving.

"There is still controversy out there," Dunlap says, "but we feel pretty confident that, looking at the landscape of science and law, that this is something we can take to the public and the public will accept."

Dunlap says he understands the opposition that argues the standard is too strict, but he says, as with alcohol years ago, the science will improve and lawmakers can set a different standard as testing and studies indicate the need for a change.
