Jay Dresser, 61, announces his write-in bid as in independent in Maine's 2nd Congressional District race.

BANGOR, Maine - A former banker from Bangor says he will launch a write-in campaign as an independent candidate for Maine's 2nd Congressional District in an effort to defeat Republican incumbent Rep. Bruce Poliquin.

Jay Dresser, 61, says that as a former member of both the Republican and Democratic parties, he is convinced that neither offers candidates who can effectively represent the district's voters.

"I feel like both parties represent more large institutions than they do the everyday citizen," Dresser said today. "And I will advocate for both - institutions and the elite and the common citizen. And I will be accessible."

Dresser, who is making his first run at elected office, says he wants to redirect large portions of the U.S. military budget for diplomatic purposes and end the country's production of weaponry including warships, jet fighters and tanks.
