The University of Maine Blackbears lost their semifinal Football Championship Subdivision playoff game to the third-seeded Eastern Washington University Eagles, 50-19.
Saturday's game in Cheney, Washington saw U Maine's Chris Ferguson throwing 325 yards for seventh-seeded Maine (10-4).
Early turnovers and interceptions contributed to Maine falling behind early in the game. Maine's first touchdown did not come until midway through the third quarter.
Still, it was the best season the Blackbears had ever had in the school's 127-year history, with Blackbear parties held across the state Saturday to watch the game on ESPN-2, where the announcers noted the Blackbears' excellent season, and predicted that the team had a lot to look forward to.
Eastern Washington now advances to meet North Dakota State.
