By Darren Fishell, Bangor Daily News

PORTLAND, Maine — Midcoast businessman Reade Brower has reached a deal to purchase MaineToday Media, the newspaper group that owns the Portland Press Herald, the Maine Sunday Telegram, the Kennebec Journal and the Morning Sentinel.

In a phone interview late Tuesday afternoon, Brower confirmed to the Bangor Daily News that he plans to purchase the newspaper group, which also owns the Bath-based Coastal Journal. He did not provide information on the selling price or conditions of the sale.

The majority owner of the newspaper is S. Donald Sussman, husband of U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree.

Mary Pols, a features writer for MaineToday Media, tweeted at 5:30 p.m. that the sale will take effect June 1.

A formal announcement of the sale is expected Tuesday evening.
