LEWISTON, Maine - FairPoint Communications plans to lay off more than 100 workers in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.
FairPoint spokeswoman Angelynne Beaudry says the decision was not made lightly. "We are in a highly competitive industry and have seen a decline in the past 12 months. As any prudent business would, we need to align the size of our work force to meet the needs of the business."
The two unions who represent FairPoint employees say they'll fight for every job they can. In a written statement, union spokesmen say that since a major layoff in 2015, the workers who have remained have been asked to do more in less time, and customers suffer.
The unions have scheduled meetings with FairPoint next week.
