MaineHealth Leaders Announce Plans To Retire

The state's largest healthcare organization, MaineHealth, is launching a national search for two new leaders. The nonprofit announced Wednesday that CEO Bill Caron is retiring at the end of 2020, and President Rich Petersen will retire six months later.

"It's a big job,” says Bill Burke, board chair of MaineHealth. “As we all know, healthcare is constantly changing. What the state of healthcare will look like five years from now is, in some ways, anybody's guess."

Burke says it will take time to find replacements.

"One of the reasons we are making the announcement now is, to find someone at this level, to do a national search takes a bit of time," Burke says.

MaineHealth is the largest health system north of Boston and the state's largest employer, with more than 19,000 employees. It recently unified its eight hospitals under one governing board. The nonprofit also operates a behavioral healthcare network and home health agencies.
