Maine Historical Society Honors JOAN BENOIT SAMUELSON as the 2024 Maine History Maker

Joan Benoit (USA) Women's Marathon Gold, 1984 Olympic Summer Games

Maine Historical Society Honors JOAN BENOIT SAMUELSON as the 2024 Maine History Maker

Maine Historical Society invites the public to celebrate the remarkable story of Joan Benoit Samuelson at this year’s Maine History Maker event.

In 1984, Joan stunned crowds, winning the first-ever Olympic women's marathon in Los Angeles. She instantly became an international icon: a groundbreaking athlete whose commitment, grit, resilience, and civic leadership continue to inspire young women and audiences throughout the world. Here in Maine, she is also a down-to-earth neighbor who reflects the shared values of fellow Mainers and fills people with tremendous pride in our state.

Joan's Maine roots run deep: her family founded and, for nearly a century, ran one of Maine’s leading businesses, A.H. Benoit & Co. Her father was influential in the development of Maine’s early ski industry. From her childhood in Cape Elizabeth to her active work for the Greater Maine community, and educational and environmental causes, Joan is a Mainer first and foremost. Working with close friends and partners, she created and is the driving force behind the TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race.

This special evening at L.L.Bean's new headquarters includes a reception with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres followed by a program featuring Joan, her Maine story, tributes, video features, and more. Tickets are $80 MHS Member / $90 General Admission. For more information, visit mainehistory.org/maine-history-maker.

The Maine History Maker recognizes Mainers shaping our state through innovation, leadership, and commitment to community. Proceeds support MHS's core activities, resources, and statewide programming.
