80-Year-Old Emerging Artist Shows New Work at Midcoast Maine Animal Shelter
Art Heals Him While He Helps Pets
(Thomaston ME) – The Art Wall at Pope Memorial Humane Society (PMHS) is now showing
“Off the Wall Abstracts at Pope,” a mixed media art exhibit by Jeff Wolff, through March 31st, 2023. Visiting hours are Monday through Saturday, from 11am to 4pm. 30% of sales go to supporting the pets at PMHS, located at 25 Buttermilk Lane, in Thomaston, ME.
Jeff Wolff, who has battled major depression for 49 years, says, “Making art takes my mind off my mind. 90% of the time I start with no idea. The shapes or colors I draw early on dictate where to go. I rarely do a work absent Black. Yet it’s this BLACKNESS that demands I find relief in colors. And I have… at least much of the time.”
Jeff Wolff discovered visual artmaking later in life, just after retiring to Rockland, Maine in 2013. Prior to this life-changing move, he built a successful career at iconic NYC advertising agencies. During this time, he won 32 awards for writing, primarily for copywriting, but in other genres as well, including a Power Of Print Award from Time Magazine for a piece sounding an alarm focused on nuclear war. He is married to artist Lori E. Schafer; together they have a daughter and grandson in Los Angeles and live in Rockland with one mixed-breed dog.
“I am grateful to Marjorie Strauss and the PMHS team for this opportunity to show recent work and try to help the shelter pets a bit. Dogs and art are subjects I have always cared deeply about.”
