Janie Meneely & Rob van Sante present an evening of music as lively as it is eclectic, with songs culled from maritime traditions old and new mixed with contemporary ballads about the ways of today’s world.
Their songs—and their on-stage banter, for that matter—are laced with humor (sometimes bawdy!) and spill out with galvanizing energy. Whether they sing of long-ago tragedy at sea, retell a campfire ghost story or offer up a song of social justice, their music invites audience participation, and that, to their mind, remains the most gratifying aspect of any given performance.
What better way to experience this amazing duo than surrounded by artifacts of our shared maritime heritage?
Check out the museum website for additional concerts this summer!

That '90s band !
Hello Newman is "That '90s Band" you vaguely remember from your best nights out in Maine. Having played over 1000 shows, more than half of which were at Bull Feeney's (R.I.P.!) in Portland's Old Port, Jim, Derek and the guys have refined a quintessentially '90s-Rock live show that is second to no other in the Northeast. Their repertoire has been carefully curated through the years, 15 and counting to be exact, thanks to the energy displayed by the band's organically grown and extremely enthusiastic fanbase, known affectionately as "Newmanators".

Words and Music featuring Robert Gans, piano and voice
Samuel Barber’s Nocturne op. 33 is a piece that I had the good fortune of being introduced to when I heard a PCM board member practicing it in the Performance Hall. I was immediately intrigued by it’s unique sound created by the left hand which is tonal, and the right hand which is 12 tone/atonal.
Prokofieff’s Visions Fugitives #5 – 8 are a follow up to #1 – 4 which I played at a previous concert.
I wrote Collage and Rhapsodic Variations at the same time and premiered them at one of the Back Bay Contemporary Music Festivals where they were well received by the music press. Collage is a hybrid neo-romantic-impressionist piece and Rhapsodic Variations consists of variations on an eight note theme and is also in a neo-romantic style.
The Ocean, More Than You and Moving On are three songs I wrote and recorded for an album and two musicals.

Borrowing its name from a Brazilian wild sugar-apple, Biribá Union features Mike Block (cello, vocals), Christylez Bacon (beatbox, guitar, rhymes), and Patricia Ligia (electric bass, vocals). The trio met through Silkroad’s Global Musician Workshop, initially bonding over their shared love of Brazilian music. They quickly began co-writing new music that draws on the freestyle theatrics of hip-hop and Go-go music; the effortless beauty of Brazilian forró and choro; the earthiness of American roots music, and the improvisational spontaneity of jazz.
FREE 6-7 pre-show:
Cross-cultural collaboration is at the heart of what Biribà Union is exploring when they compose and perform together. Featuring three musicians from different backgrounds (jazz/hip-hop/classical) and cultures (Uruguay / Washington D.C. / Kansas), we will have a discussion and Q&A about their diverse backgrounds, exploring the challenges and strengths of artists working together outside of their usual comfort zone.
