Maine Hunting Season for 6 Birds, Mammals Starts

PORTLAND, Maine — Several Maine hunting seasons get started in the middle of this week.

Wednesday is the first day for the hunting season for six game birds and mammals. The hunt starts Oct. 1 for ruffed grouse, bobwhite quail, pheasant, gray squirrel, snowshoe hare, and raccoon. The seasons for the three birds, raccoons and gray squirrels end on Dec. 31. Snowshoe hare season ends on March 31.

Squirrels have a special extended season until Feb. 28 for falconry, and snowshoe hares have a shorter season on Vinalhaven Island that ends Feb. 28.

The animals are all subject to bag limits, except raccoons.
