Maine Hospitals Get $900K Grant for Chronic Care Initiatives

Ten hospitals in northeastern Maine have received a nearly $900,000 federal grant to work collaboratively to help chronically ill patients.

The CEO of Cary Medical Center in Caribou, Kris Doody, says the three-year grant will help the hospitals overcome current challenges in health care.

"We're dealing with challenges in physician recruitment, staff recruitment, labor costs, and at the same time, the population we're taking care of is aging," Doody says. "And as the population ages, there's a lot of chronic illness that's associated with an aging population."

Doody says the 10 hospitals will focus on illnesses such as diabetes and congestive heart failure, and will use technology to connect and share best practices.
