AUGUSTA, Maine — Advocates gathered at the State House today in support of a measure that would require GMO labeling.
In 2013, Maine lawmakers passed a law that requires labeling of food distributed in Maine that is produced using genetically modified organisms, but only if five contiguous states, including Maine, pass a similar requirement. Advocates are seeking a repeal of that trigger.
"Consumers are simply no longer willing to sit quietly by while corporations make us the unwitting subjects of their risky science experiments," says Katherine Paul with the Organic Consumers Association.
The measure being considered would also repeal a provision of current law that cancels a potential GMO labeling requirement in Maine if five contiguous states don't pass such a mandate by January 1, 2018.
