Investigators: Scarborough Fire Accidental

Investigators from the State Fire Marshal's Office say a major fire on Route One in Scarborough last night was accidental. The fire broke out in the Scarborough Commons business complex just after seven.

Sergeant Tim York, from the state Fire Marshal's Office, says he has completed his investigation and concluded that the fire started in the ceiling of a chiropractor's treatment room.

"We're not being very specific, other than to say it was an electrical malfunction in the void space above Unit 7 in that area," York said at a news conference this afternoon.

The fire started in an area of the building that did not have sprinklers, although newer parts of the complex did. Sixteen private businesses occupied the Scarborough Commons complex.

Three firefighters suffered minor injuries on scene. Authorities say the blaze caused at least $1 million in damage.
