WASHINGTON - Maine's two U.S. senators are headed to Guantanamo Bay Friday on a "fact-finding" mission with several other senators.
Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King will join several other senators, including Joe Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat, Illinois Republican Mark Kirk, and Democrats Brian Schatz, of Hawaii, Chris Coons, of Delaware, and Joe Donnelly, of Indiana, on the mission.
The trip is being billed as a "fact-finding oversight trip." They plan to review detainee facilities and detention operations, along with the legal status of individual detainees and the military commissions process used to try detainees, according to a joint press release.
The purpose of the mission is "to ensure that the government is doing everything possible to protect the safety of Americans and make certain that tax dollars are appropriately expended," Collins and King say in the release.
