HALLOWELL, Maine — For the first time in more than 20 years, one of the country's most famous documents is coming to two events to commemorate Independence Day.
The Kennebec Journal reports the city of Hallowell will display the city's 1776 copy of the Declaration of Independence.
The document, which was recently appraised at $1.2 million, will be guarded by police at the events from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at City Hall.
The document was one of many printed after the Declaration of Independence's adoption to inform people that their leaders considered themselves sovereign.
The document is one of about 20 known copies in existence. It will be read by Mayor Mark Walker on the first day and by current state Rep. Charlotte Warren on the second.
