Coast Guard Swimmer Rescues 2 After Boat Grounds off Maine

SOUTHWEST HARBOR, Maine - The Coast Guard says it rescued two people after their 30-foot pleasure craft ran aground off Seawall Point.

Crew members from Coast Guard Station Southwest Harbor responded at 11 a.m. Tuesday but because of shallow water surrounding the shoal where the boat grounded, they couldn't safely get to the passengers.

When he saw the Coast Guard, the 86-year-old operator of the stranded boat tried to row a small tender boat to the Coast Guard rescue boat but he and his wife fell overboard without life jackets. The couple was not identified.

Both were rescued by Coast Guard swimmer Petty Officer Calvin Legge who called it a unique situation.

The Coast Guard was monitoring the situation until the boat was refloated at high tide. There were no pollution concerns.
