Evidence of Big Snake Found in Westbrook

Courtesy of Westbrook Police Dept

WESTBROOK, Maine _ Westbrook Police say they they've documented a very large snake skin, apparently shed in Riverbank Park, along the banks of the Presumpscot River.

The skin was located late Saturday afternoon.

Several weeks ago, a snake, estimated to be about 10 feet long, was observed eating what was thought to be a beaver in that area.

Westbrook police chief Janine Roberts is telling residents to "maintain a safe distance" and report any large snakes to the police. Meanwhile, the department will try to identify the snake.

Biologists say the snake is clearly not native to the state and is likely a Burmese Python. They say the chances of the snake surviving winter in Maine are practically nil.
