AUGUSTA, Maine -The Atlantic hurricane season is officially underway and Maine officials are reminding coastal residents to be prepared to protect themselves and property.
Insurance Superintendent Eric Cioppa said it's a good time for Mainers to ensure they have adequate insurance coverage. He said most homeowners' insurance policies don't include flood insurance, and quick action is needed for people who need to upgrade coverage.
He and Maine Gov. Paul LePage also urged people who might find themselves in harm's way to ensure they have assembled an emergency supply kit.
The official National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast calls for 11 to 17 named storms, with five to nine hurricanes. Two to four hurricanes are expected to be "major'' with sustained winds of at least 111 mph.
