ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine will receive significant federal funding to further research into advancing transportation research and technology.
The U.S. Department of Transportation announced Wednesday it will award the university $14 million over the next five years to create the University Transportation Center. WABI-TV reports UMaine will lead a coalition of six universities in New England to conduct research on the challenges facing the future of the national transportation system.
Every five years since 1987, academic institutions nationwide compete to form their region's UTC.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has been previously chosen to lead the initiative the past five rounds.
