Fate of Gubernatorial Candidacy for NH Republican to Be Decided Today

Republican candidate for Governor Walt Havenstein
Jennifer Hauck, Valley News

The state's Ballot Law Commission will hear evidence about whether Republican candidate for governor Walt Havenstein can run for office.

A hearing is set for 9:30 Monday morning.

Democrats say he was a resident of Maryland in 2010 and 2011. Candidates for governor must live in New Hampshire for at least seven years. They point to a tax break Havenstein got on his Maryland condominium as evidence he was not a New Hampshire resident during those years.

Havenstein says he and his wife, Judy, have lived in New Hampshire since they bought a house in Alton in 1999 and that he has always voted in the state.

Havenstein is in a primary race against Andrew Hemingway for the GOP's nomination to take on incumbent Democrat Maggie Hassan in November.
