"Hey, hey, ho, ho, poverty wages have go," was the chant of protestors outside a Portland hotel yesterday, where U.S. House Speaker John Boehner was making an appearance.
Boehner was raising money for fellow Republican Bruce Poliquin, who's trying to win the 2nd Congressional District race against Democrat Emily Cain and independent Blaine Richardson.
The protestors criticized Boehner for not supporting a minimum wage raise for workers. "We're here because Mr. Boehner is here," said Maine AFL-CIO President Don Berry. The House has voted numerous times against minimum wage. We think a minimum wage would be helpful to the people. Seven-fifty or $7.25 an hour here in Maine is not enough to live on. It doesn't pay the bills."
The private fundraiser came with a $250 price tag for a reception and $1,000 for a photo with Boehner. The fundraiser was off-limits to the press, and Boehner did not make a public statement. And while Portland isn't in the 2nd District, the Poliquin campaign said it was the only place that fit the Speaker's schedule.
