Maine Lawmakers to Consider About 1,700 Bills

AUGUSTA, Maine - Maine lawmakers have submitted 1,540 proposals to be written into bills for the Legislature to consider this session.

Legislative Council Executive Director Grant Pennoyer told legislative leaders Thursday that there are other bills up for consideration as well.

"There are a 140 other bills in the mix, which includes 120 department or agency bills and another 20 filed pursuant to law or statue," Pennoyer said.

Lawmakers had until last Friday to file their bill drafting requests. While lawmakers will now need approval of legislative leaders to propose legislation, the governor can submit legislation at any time, and typically proposes a few dozen bill, including the budget and other spending bills.

All the measures will have public hearings once they are printed.
