AUGUSTA, Maine - A tentative budget struck by the Maine Senate is under attack. Several conservative groups around the state are asking Senate Republicans to reject the budget, which doesn't include income tax cuts or changes to welfare programs.
The Maine Heritage Policy Center and five other conservative groups wrote a letter to Senate Republicans calling the tentative budget deal "simply unacceptable" and requesting that Republicans stand firm against "allowing liberal lawmakers to preserve the status quo."
Carol Weston, state director of the Maine Chapter of Americans for Prosperity, says teamwork is essential to solving Maine's budget troubles. "I'm not dictating what they do but I know that they've had plans in the past and that there is an answer. I just want them to work together to come to that answer."
Gov. Paul LePage urged the caucus to reject the proposed budget deal at the House Republican Caucus Friday.
