Maine’s Senators Prepare For James Comey Hearing

Maine’s two senators are preparing to hear from fired FBI director James Comey Thursday. U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King, who both serve on the Senate Intelligence Committee, say they are seeking specific details.

Collins, a Republican, points out that in his letter to Comey, President Donald Trump says three times that Comey told him he was not under investigation. Collins says she wants to know the context of those comments.

“Does Mr. Comey agree that that is what was said? Why would he tell the president that? What was the tone and the context of those discussions?” she says.

King, an independent, says the public might not get all the answers they are looking for because Comey may be reluctant to talk in detail about issues that are under investigation by special prosecutor Robert Mueller.

“Clearly, what I think everybody is interested in is, what did the president say to Jim Comey and what were the circumstances surrounding his firing?” he says.

Both senators say they heard a lot of comments from their constituents last week, and that they want to know what transpired.
