Today’s society is evolving as greater attention is paid to how people choose to identify themselves. In this context, the terms “gender fluidity” and "nonbinary" can describe those who do not always feel that they fall under traditional gender labels of male or female. As Maine considers adding a nonbinary option to birth certificates, we will explore what it means to be gender fluid—and what challenges people face when their gender identity does not conform to societal constraints.
