Freeman A. Hrabowski, President of the University of Maryland, gave the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Commemorative Address at Colby College.
Dr. Hrabowski spoke about his role in the civil rights movement as a child leader. He led children who marched with Martin Luther King Jr. in Alabama. At age 12 Hrabowski was spat upon by Sheriff Bull Conner and spent days in jail. He now is a leading voice in higher education, particularly the success of underrepresented minorities in STEM subjects, and he was recently named by President Obama to chair the new President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans.
