The Vermont-based Northeast Wilderness Trust in partnership with Maine Coast Heritage Trust have conserved 2,037 acres adjacent to the Cutler Coast Public Reserved Land. The parcel, which will be allowed to "rewild" for the support of wildlife, will remain open for public access including hunting and fishing.

Maine rocket company bluShift Aerospace had eyed the Downeast town as a potential site for offshore launches, as well as an operations and manufacturing plant.

The designation means that the region is now considered a nationally significant landscape and will be eligible for 10 years of federal funds.
