PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rhode Island Congressman David Cicilline has introduced a resolution thanking doctors and medical volunteers for helping respond to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.
Cicilline says the world owes a "tremendous debt of gratitude" to those risking their lives to treat patients and stop spread of the disease.
The Democratic representative filed the non-binding resolution with U.S. Rep. Karen Bass, a California Democrat who says it was "embarrassing" how some officials treated Maine nurse Kaci Hickox after she returned from treating Ebola victims in West Africa.
The World Health Organization says more than 540 health workers, including several Americans, have been infected in West Africa. The United States Agency for International Development has received nearly 4,800 health care volunteer requests through its website.
