Waterville Theater Company Folding

WATERVILLE, Maine — A local theater company says it's closing up shop after failing to reach an affordable rental agreement for its longtime performance space.

Evan Sposato, board president of Aqua City Actors Theatre, says the group could not meet new lease terms set by Waterville Creates.

"It's a sad day for all of us who are involved and I'd like to thank everybody who's acted, volunteered with ACAT, and everybody who's come and seen our shows and supported us," he says.

Sposato says that for 17 years and over 72 shows, ACAT has produced high-quality and reasonably priced live theater for the Waterville community.

He says ACAT has staged shows that focus on the craft of acting rather than on selling tickets.

"We try to put on productions that are a little more 'out there,' a little more edgy, that highlight actors rather than things with name recognition that will put butts in seats," Sposato says.

He says the group may seek out another venue, but says theater space in Waterville is limited.
