PORTLAND, Maine — Maine fishery regulators say a proposal for the coming scallop season likely will include the same number of fishing days as last year, but emergency cutbacks might be necessary.
The 2014-15 proposal includes a 70-day season in zones one and two and 50-day season in zone three. The Department of Maine Marine Resources originally proposed to cut 22 days in zones one and two and 18 days in zone 3. Department Chairman Patrick Keliher says the state anticipates ``having to cut days from the season'' mid-year.
Scallop season typically runs from Dec. 1 to April 15. December is usually the most productive month. The haul for calendar 2013 of 424,547 pounds of meat was the highest since 2000.
Keliher will set the season schedule after three public hearings in September.
