PORTLAND, Maine — Portland officials say a developer can build a boat repair yard for large recreational and commercial vessels on the city's downtown waterfront.
The Portland Press Herald reports Phineas Sprague Jr. wants to build a 27,600-square-foot building on five acres he owns on West Commercial Street near the Casco Bay Bridge. The building would be located alongside a recently built 19,000-square-foot building.
Portland's Planning Board approved the latest version of the proposal on Tuesday night. Sprague had to put off an earlier plan because of an expansion of the city's shipping terminal.
Sprague says he was on a tight deadline to get planning approval for the new project because his Portland Yacht Services has until Dec. 31 to move out of its current space off of Fore Street.
