HOWLAND, Maine - Summit Natural Gas of Maine is promising to reimburse customers who paid a contractor for work that was never done.
A spokesman for the natural gas company tells the Portland Press Herald that it feels strongly that reimbursing residents who lost deposits to the now-defunct Dave Ireland Builders it the right thing to do.
David Ireland Jr., who owns the company, collected thousands of dollars from Cumberland county customers to convert their home heating systems to natural gas but didn't complete the work.
Ireland told WSCH-TV that he tried to keep his business afloat and planned to repay the deposits over the next two years.
Summit didn't say how much money it expects to hand out, but town officials had estimated that between 100 and 200 homeowners were affected.
