WATERVILLE, Maine - Maine's two biggest mountains are opening for the ski season.

The Morning Sentinel reports Sunday River in Newry opened last Friday on a daily basis, and Sugarloaf Mountain in Carrabassett Valley is planning to open daily this Friday.

Both mountains were helped by a dumping of 10 inches of natural snow over the weekend.

It is unclear if Saddleback ski resort will open for the season. Its owners announced plans to sell the ski area to the Majella Group last year, but the CEO of the company was charged with fraud in June.

Smaller ski areas, including Titcomb Mountain and Lost Valley, are scheduled to open in early December.

The Easton Mountain Ski Area will open Dec. 26.
