The evening begins in the rolling hills, blooming heather, and open skies of Scotland with "The Highlands", a new work by Resident Choreographer Linda MacArthur Miele. Of Scottish descent herself, Miele brings a personal connection to this neoclassical ballet, which celebrates the strength, grace, and spirit of the Scottish people.
From there, the program shifts from sweeping landscapes to whimsical storytelling with The Magic Toyshop. Step inside a charming French toy shop and experience the heartwarming story of a master toymaker, his array of dancing dolls, and enduring love with "Magic Toy Shop". When two children fall in love with the same pair of Can-Can dolls while visiting the shop, the enterprising toymaker strikes a compromise between the feuding parents to sell the dolls separately. That night, the other toys hatch a clever plan to keep their friends together. But will it succeed? Join Maine State Ballet for this enchanting tale to find out!
Choreography is by Resident Choreographer and former New York City Ballet dancer Linda MacArthur Miele, with costumes and scenery by Associate Director Gail Csoboth, and light design by Frederick Bernier.
