Not Guilty Plea in Death of Pregnant Girlfriend

AUBURN, Maine - A Lewiston man charged with running down and killing his pregnant girlfriend in Maine is pleading not guilty.

Evaristo De Deus appeared in Androscoggin County Superior Court on Wednesday. He is charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Laudrinha Kubeloso, who was four months pregnant when she was struck and killed by an SUV. De Deus later tried to flee to Haiti.

The Sun Journal reports that a bail hearing is expected soon. An affidavit says a witness saw a man "run her over and continue driving.'' Police later traced the vehicle to De Deus.

De Deus and Kubeloso were recent asylum seekers from Angola. A judge ordered De Deus held without bail during a brief appearance in the same court on Sept. 26.
