Police Charge Man With Setting Fire at Ellsworth Bird Sanctuary

ELLSWORTH, Maine — Police have arrested a man they allege set a fire at a building at an Ellsworth bird sanctuary.

State police announced Monday that 31-year-old Christopher Kidder has been charged with arson, burglary and other offenses in connection with the fire in March 2014 that damaged the museum at the Stanwood Wildlife Sanctuary and led to a serious injury to a firefighter. The museum was the homestead of the sanctuary's founder.

No birds are kept in the building and no people were inside at the time of the fire.

According to its website, the 200-acre sanctuary that includes nature trails is named for early 20th century ornithologist, photographer and writer Cordelia Stanwood.

Kidder, described by police as homeless, is in jail and it's not clear whether he has a lawyer.
