Portland Landlord in Fatal Fire Case Due in Court in November

PORTLAND, Maine - The owner of a Portland apartment building where six people died in a fire is due back in court on Nov. 20.

Gregory Nisbet pleaded not guilty to six counts of manslaughter on July 31.

Grand jury indictments came down against Nisbet after plea negotiations broke down last month. He is also charged with misdemeanor code violations.

Investigators say Nisbet didn't have working smoke detectors in the house, and that improperly disposed smoking materials on the porch started the fire. His attorney says Nisbet installed the smoke detectors, but tenants disabled them.

Nisbet will appear in Superior Court in Portland. Court officials say his next appearance will be a conference.
